Barrow Football Club
Barrow AFC play at Holker Street football ground and is approximately 100 meters from the main A590 Walney Road into Barrow, next to the local ASDA supermarket. Founded in 1901 Barrow has a loyal fan base and is a family club with dads taking their sons just like their fathers before them. These kids will become the fans of the future and hopefully repeat the procedure.
The road alongside the ground is named Wilkie Road and is a testament to Ray Wilkie. Ray was one of Barrows greatest managers who joined Barrow in the 85-86 season. The highlight was winning the FA Trophy in 1990 at Wembley. Sadly Ray Wilkie was taken ill and departed the club in 1991 and sadly passed away soon after. His name will live for ever in Barrows history.
It is a credit to all the hardworking members of Barrow AFC that the club was able to pull together when in 1999 the club was subject of a compulsory winding up order. With determination and support of the people of Barrow the club did survive and in 2002 the club was bought back from the liquidator and in 2003 The FA allowed Barrow football membership to be transferred to the newly formed company.
In recent times Barrow has enjoyed success due to the joint managers David Bayliss and Darren Sheridan and led to Barrow to the non league version of the cup final at Wembly were Barrow won 2-1.
