Food and Drink

There is a wide range of food available and with price ranges to suit from fast food, cafes to restaurants. An average restaurant meal will be around 15 to 20 for a main course and I would recommend that you go on a web site such as toptable to find recommendations for that special meal if you want to go up market a little. Below are a few of my favourites that I went to on my last two visits and all represented great value for money. Beer is on average 4 to 5 euros for a pint (or it would be if they filled the glass up) shorts are around the same but make sure you check the price list before ordering as a short and bottle of mixer could work out expensive. A lot better value are the bottles of stronger beer, these are more tasty than the draft and being stronger you dont need as many.

Pasta n Basta Italian Restaurant

Pasta n Basta RestaurantThis restaurant was recommended on web sites so we pre booked using top table and what a great night was had by all. It is a set price of for a three coarse meal and a bottle of good quality wine 25. The starters are a self service job and uniquely all the food is inside a grand piano. The choice was excellent as was the quality. You pick the main course and from the menu and again there is a good choice. I would recommend you book the meal for around seven o clock and be prepared to take your time as you will be there to until at least 10 pm because the reason the restaurant differs from many is that every 25 minutes the waiters and waitresses take it in turn to sing all ranges of songs. The girl who sang an opera song without the microphone was incredible. A great night out this place is highly recommended.

De Waaghal

De Waaghal RestaurantThis restaurant was also pre booked and it served vegetarian food. Now I am not vegetarian but when cooked properly it can be very tasty food. We were not disappointed it was great. The cost for a set menu meal was around the €30 mark. A bottle of organic beer €4 and a caraff of wine €15 went down well. Everyone was friendly and helpful and even though it was a set menu there was no problem changing a few of the desserts around to suit our tastes. A ten minute walk past the Rijks Museum set in a lovely area it is well worth a visit.

De Compagnon

De Compagnon RestaurantNow this is a restaurant you would not come across if you were just walking around as it is situated down an alley on the edge of the red light district. Goggle map it first if you intend going. As an idea if you go down the road outside the Grand Krasknapolsky hotel on Dam square and turn down the alley with Hunters coffee shop on the corner. The food is more expensive than some but excellent for that special night in Amsterdam. A three coarse meal with wine came to 130 euros but considering we were in there for three hours, unrushed and served great tasty meals it did represent great value.

Envy RestaurantEnvy restaurant is situated about a ten minute walk from the flower market and totally different to your usual restaurant. At first when we looked at the menu we were a little confused but a very polite waitress explained what we had to do. Instead of ordering one main meal she explained that the portions were smaller and you order five or six and these which are then brought one at a time to the table. Each dish is excellent and full of taste. With wine our bill came to just over 100 euros. As with most booking is recommended especially here as it attracts a lot of local custom. Greetings to the local couple below who made us welcome and I am so jealous of you living in such a wonderful city. Take care and good luck for 2010.
Two local food lovers

Romana RestaurantNow at the other end of the scale but equally as good is the Romana restaurant. Situated in the street directly behind the flower market it represents fantastic value. It was that good we broke our own rules and went back for a meal on New Years eve after an earlier visit in the week. The pasta dishes are first class and a meal of two starters, two main dishes, one desert and a litre of house wine came to just over 55 euros. The house wine at 13 euros a litre was great value. Well worth a visit and it wont break the bank.
